BERKLEY, Mich. (WXYZ) — A Berkley man is under investigation after a Nov. 20 explosion of a residential garage caused by the illegal production of marijuana wax.
Berkley Fire Marshal Lt. Corey Miller said the butane process with marijuana that creates the wax caused the explosion – vapors built up in the garage from butane and reached an ignition source.
The garage was located in the 2700 block of Philips Avenue in Berkley. Police responded to the explosion around 6:30 p.m.
According to Miller, the suspect sustained burns from the explosion but ran away before police arrived. He was interviewed the next day as part of the police investigation.
Police are waiting for lab results confirming THC was being made at the makeshift lab. Once the results are in, they, along with the investigation’s findings, will be submitted to the prosecutor’s office, which will likely issue charges for the suspect.
