Canna-business has been on a tear and so is LeafLink, a trailblazing company that offers an online commerce platform connecting cannabis dispensaries and brands. California legalized recreational marijuana use just weeks ago, bringing the total number of states with fully legalized recreational use to eight. In just under thirty states, marijuana is medically legal. And Newsweek reports that twelve states are about to consider legalization. Ryan Smith, co-founder and CEO of LeafLink, saw an opportunity to capitalize on the business trend. So far, the company has been tightly run with just 27 employees, but as of the recording of this episode, the recent $10 million raised is leading to an immediate hiring spree — all departments need to scale to keep up with growth and demand. It’s seems that weed is, well, spreading like a weed.
On this episode of the “Forbes Under-30” podcast, hear Smith talk about founding a company in an industry he knew little about, the canna-business pain point he set out to fix and how LeafLink is impacted by the clashing federal and state attitude towards legalization. Plus, find out what the most popular product is in mature marijuana-legal states (like Colorado and Washington).
